The dedication and determination of the South Woodham Ferrers Rollerspeed Skating Club
has been rewarded recently after winning ‘Club of the Year 2007’
at the glittering Essex Sports Awards in Chelmsford.
The Essex Sports Awards celebrate and recognise the very best in sport in Essex and those
people who participate, support its provision and invest personally in its ongoing development.
The Club were one of three finalists short listed from a record number of nominations, along with
Brentwood Trampoline Club & Earls Hall Junior Football Team. With a fantastic year of results the
Club were announced as the winners and presented the top honour by Baker Tilley, sponsor of the award.
Over 200 attendees were told of the clubs National & International achievements this year, which
included 14 Championship titles, 4 British records, three outstanding performance awards, and top ranked
club in Great Britain, remarking how even more incredible this was as the club train in a multi storey
car park and do not have a facility to house the incredibly talented athletes.
In addition to this the Club were also short listed, as one of only four sports bodies from Essex, for
the regional BBC East Sports Awards at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford.
Despite the accolade the club are outraged that they are still forced to train on the top floor of a
multi storey car park in another town. Chelmsford Borough Council ostracise the club from the community
because the need for a training facility are completely ignored. The club work tirelessly to promote
inclusion of sport for all, and do a great deal of positive things for youngsters within the town and
local schools.
