HIS LIFE OF SERVICE TO USA ROLLER SPORTS

December 12, 2007

CHARLES WAHLIG of Wilmington, Delaware, an acclaimed international benefactor for roller sports, passed away December 7, 2007 after sustained illness caused by cancer. He was 74 years old. Charles Wahlig had dedicated 63 years of his lifetime to intense involvement and support of amateur competitive roller skating. Along this path, Charlie garnered many laurels, first as an athlete and then as a coach in speed and artistic roller skating. Later, he and his wife Connie created their family livelihood from the development, ownership and successful management of roller skating rinks. At the same time, Charlie dedicated substantial amounts of time and talent to the management of programs in his roller sport federation, where he was often the one person who was most uniquely qualified to deal with the challenge. He always found it difficult to say no to any request for help that originated from his sport.

The following tribute is from a senior member of the Federation of Inline Speed Skating

Charles had been a good friend of British speed skating for many years. The hospitality and help that he gave to the GB National Speed Team at the World Championships in Colorado Springs forged a friendship that goes back well over 20 years. His contribution to the sport of inline speed skating will be greatly missed. British Roller Sports would like to convey its condolences to Charles's family on their sad loss.

Herne Bay United vs Hockey Club Prato (ITA)

The Pier, Herne Bay ~ Saturday, 15 December 2007

Having won the English Premier League title Herne Bay United seniors will be competing in the European League for the 2007/8 season.

This European league is made-up of clubs from among the national champions of each European country, the current holders of the Champions' League and the winner and runner-up of the CERS Cup 2006/7.

Herne Bay United is drawn in Group "B" along with FC Porto (PRT), Hockey Club Prato (ITA), Club Pati Vic (ESP) and has to play each club both at home and away. The home match with the Spanish Club, Pati Vic was played at The Pier on 17 November, the forthcoming match with the Italian Club HC Prato takes place on Saturday 15 December, and the third home match, with FC Porto is scheduled for 19 January.

Aileen Baker said:
The Italians - Hockey Club Prato - are the visiting team on this occasion. Their player coach is the only name familiar to us - Enrico Bernadini. A veteran now and we saw him recently in an exhibition game in Montreux at the World Championships. He may not have quite the speed he had in 1999 but he now has the extra experience to use his skills to very good effect. He also still has the trademark of wearing only one glove!

ROLLER SPORTS
&
THE OLYMPIC GAMES

Dear Friends of rollersports,

The time has come for rollersports to change skin and achieve a brand new identity. I used the term “identity” and not “new image” because the planning and communication project activated by FIRS is a wider and more comprehensive strategy, created with a professional approach towards media and public.

Thinking professionally is the only possible path driving us safely to the IOC Session Copenhagen 2009, a date where the Olympic Programme shall be revised and where the fate of our sports can be changing forever, much depending on our common efforts.

We want Roller sports in the Olympic Games, so here is the project “ROLLER FOR OLYMPICS by FIRS”: a new professional project, with a new unique logo and an increased staff in the FIRS Headquarters in Rome, with distinguished roles and responsibilities working on different activities according to planned deadlines. Key man of this Olympic project is Mr Luciano Barra, former member of the Italian Olympic Committee and Vice General Director of the Winter Olympics Turin 2006, a man whom I can easily call “the right man at the right place”. Mr Barra shall supervise the FIRS contacts with the Olympic Commission and the IOC Members, as the official spokesman for roller sports.

The World Championships starts on the 17th August and run through to the 25th August,
which means we have seven days to acclimatize and recover after our twenty hour flight.
