CLIFFORD ROY STAFFORD

CLIFFORD ROY STAFFORD
1922 - 2008

Cliff Stafford was born on 26th January 1922. By the time he had reached his 17th birthday he had become a member of the National Skating Association of Great Britain. His interest and dedication to the sport of roller speed skating would last another 70 years.

It is fair to say that his competitive skating career was not considered “illustrious”, although he was part of the Leicester Roller Speed Club that won the 1939 Inter-Club Relay Championship. In fact, it was his younger brother, Dennis, who shone in the early days when the Stafford’s took to the rink and he was duly rewarded with an international call-up in 1958. However, it was Cliff who always seized opportunities and made the most of his organisational skills to make his mark on the skating world.

From: George Pickard - Retiring President FIRS, CIRILH

Friday,16 May 2008

RETIREMENT ADDRESS
BY OUTGOING CIRILH PRESIDENT
GEORGE PICKARD

I have been associated with the FIRS Inline Hockey Committee since 1994 when I petitioned the FIRS Congress in Portugal to install this sport as the newest of our four roller sports disciplines within this International Federation.

For the past 8 years I have served two terms as the CIRILH President. With your able assistance, we have together achieved remarkable progress for inline hockey development around the world.

During the period from 1995 through 2007, there have been 31 different national federations that participated with inline hockey teams at the FIRS World Championships or at Pan American Games. Among the FIRS member nations, there are now 43 countries which organize inline hockey national championships and/ or compete in FIRS Continental Championships.

At age 77 I have decided not to again stand for election as CIRILH President. It has been 8 years since I retired from a 40 year career as Executive Director of USA Roller Sports and took up this position as your CIRILH President.

Get Your Skates On!
a history of Plymouth's Roller Skating Rinks 1874-1989
by Diana Lawer

This lavishly illustrated 218-page softback examines in words and pictures how the new roller skating craze ‘rinkomania' caught on in the three towns Plymouth, Devonport and Stonehouse in the early 1870s and remained a popular pastime through to the 20th Century.

The book contains over 85 rinking postcards, including colour, and rare views of Plymouth rinks and skaters, along with 115 other illustrations and maps providing a valuable pictorial record of how The Three Towns embraced the roller skating boom with great enthusiasm.

Skate Central, Queens Road, Sheffield

Sunday, 30 March 2008

Inline speed skaters will be competing in the British Indoor Championships
this weekend at Sheffield’s Skate Central.

The Federation of Inline Speed Skaters (FISS) will be holding this annual event on Sunday 30th March. Races start at 12 noon with under 12s girls and boys and progress through the day with Juniors (16/17), Seniors and Veterans for both men and women. Spectators are welcome and there will be a chance for potential speed skaters to try for themselves during a break in the races from 2:00 to 3:00pm. The day will finish with inter club relay races and presentations. This event marks the end of the winter, indoor, season.

Inline speed skating is a fast and exhilarating sport where the skaters compete over various distances (laps) around an oval track with juniors and seniors achieving speeds of over 30mph. The latest speed skate technology gives the inline speed skater the ability to skate at very much the same pace as ice speed skaters, and their tight fitting lycra skin suits, in club colours, make every fraction of a second count in close exciting races.

Sports clubs in the Luton & Bedfordshire area
Click to access the Clubmark website

Sport England has commissioned management consultants Knight, Kavanagh & Page (KKP) to pilot an interactive project in the Bedfordshire and Luton area, prior to its roll-out across the rest of England.

The project is designed to provide a better understanding of the ability of local clubs
to cater for children and young adults.

The purpose of the exercise is to develop an interactive system that will provide ‘team BEDS&LUTON’ with a  friendly route to data. It will cover club location and status, age range of members, number of junior members and when the club meets. The system, accessed via a web browser with a detailed search facility, will display data as a series of maps, tables and summary reports for individual clubs.

A questionnaire is currently being distributed to clubs, to collect the key data and also asks about actions or support that would help clubs to sustain or increase participation in sport.

The survey has intentionally been designed to be relatively short and easy to complete and should take no longer than ten minutes. It has been produced in paper and electronic formats and can be completed in a variety of ways, as shown below:

On-line - and returned automatically to KKP via a submit button
Electronically - completing details on a Word version and e-mailing it back to KKP
On paper - completing the questionnaire and returning it via Freepost to KKP
By telephone - providing details to KKP staff.

If your club is located in Luton or Bedfordshire you are requested to contact either Peter Owens or  Charlie MacLeod of Knight, Kavanagh & Page by telephone on 0161 764 7040, or

via the Knight, Kavanagh & Page website, questionnaire, (this link opens a new page) or

by email Peter Owens or Charlie MacLeod
