  British Senior Dance Champions
Represent Great Britain at the
53rd Senior World Roller Figure Skating Championships

Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei November 2008

The British Roller Sports Federation wish to congratulate
Darren Dyke & Kirsty Chick
in their success at representing Great Britain during the
Senior World Roller Figure Skating Championships,
held in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei over the past few days.

Darren & Kirsty's home club is the Phoenix Artistic Roller Skating Club in the Channel Island of Guernsey and there are two comprehensive reports on the club website . The earlier report which describes Darren & Kirsty's passage through the British Championships, which culminated in their selection to represent Great Britain at both "The European's" and "The World's", is actually the second report on the website. The more recent report describes their time at the World Championships.

The earlier report starts with the following paragraph:

A small team of skaters from the Phoenix Artistic Roller Skating Club have just returned from the 2008 Junior & Senior British Roller Skating Championships held in Haywards Heath, Kent. Senior Couple Darren Dyke and Kirsty Chick, following their four year partnership, finally reaped the benefit of all the hard training and commitment by winning the Senior Dance title.

Disclosure Applications

All adults working with children and young people under the age of 18 should be aware of the requirement that people working with children and young people are required to submit themselves to a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure check at periodic intervals.

What may not be so widely known is how individuals set about obtaining a CRB Disclosure.

CRB Disclosure applications are initially processed (document checking etc.) on behalf of the Criminal Records Bureau by third party organisations that have been granted the status of an Umbrella Body, (also known as a Registered Body)

What may not so widely known is that the British Inline Puck Hockey Association, who are an affiliate of the British Roller Sports Federation have held the status of an Umbrella Body for some years and are able to provide a CRB disclosure checking service for both clubs and individuals.

Governing Bodies of individual disciplines and many clubs and many individuals will already have made satisfactory arrangements to apply for and receive CRB Disclosures, the following notes are for those new to this process and to those who are looking to review their existing arrangements.

meets
INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE

Dear friends of Rollersports,

I am very proud to tell you about the important meeting FIRS had in Lousanne on the 14th of November. We had, for the first time, the opportunity to show to the IOC Sports Programme Commission our sport.

At the table, to tell to the IOC Members about our world, were with me 3 former athletes of roller speed skating, acting as ambassadors of roller sports.

As you already know, myself I am a former athlete, Roberto Marotta, former World Champion, as the FIRS Secretary General, Ippolito Sanfratello who was 8 times World Champion and Derek Parra, who won Speed Skating World Championships 18 times.

But Ippolito Sanfratello and Derek Parra are also Olympic champions in ice speed skating.

At the end of their career as roller speed skaters, to won the only Medal they never had the chance to win, the Gold Olympic Medal, they had to switch to the ice.

But their hearts still beat for roller sports, and they were with us in front of the IOC Sports Commission to testify it.

Setanta wanted to make a promotional news video about our sport and link it with the coverage of the Middlesbrough Vs Blackburn game (soccer) this weekend live on Setanta Sport.

Artistic Roller Skating Championship 2008

Fuengirola, Andaluceia, Spain

An article by the BRSF roving reporter

The 2008 Junior & Senior Artistic Roller Skating Championships were held in the town of
Fuengirola, Costa del Sol, Spain Monday 22 September ~ Saturday 27 September 2008.

Click for bigger image Click for bigger image The Venue was a local authority sports hall, with raised seating for 420 spectators on each side of the hall. All the usual sports hall floor markings having been removed and replaced with a series of "8"'s.

Monday, 22/09 was the registration and practice day. Having never seen skaters practising their figures of eight, it was fascinating to see what the skaters were doing and how they were doing it!

Tuesday, 23/09 was the first of the competition days. In the morning the Junior Ladies & Junior Men's 'Figures' competitions, with the associated medal ceremony, the afternoon was set aside for practice sessions.

Sunday, 19 October 2008 ~ Swindon

The British Roller Sports Federation is looking to expand the number of
Roller Skating and Skateboarding coaches with the BRSF Coaching Award
across the United Kingdom.

The BRSF is facing an ongoing and substantial coach training and bridging programme.
Therefore the BRSF is also determined to expand the number of

With this in mind the BRSF are looking to fill these posts by recruiting both from within and from without the roller sports community, from all four home countries within the UK.

On Sunday, 19 October 2008 the BRSF are holding a training and standardisation day in Swindon, to which all existing BRSF Coach Education Tutors and Coach Education Assessors are invited.

The purpose of this training day is to ensure that all tutors and assessors are clear about the standards to which BRSF courses should be delivered and to understand the importance of supplementary paperwork.
It is also to ensure equality of courses across the roller disciplines and across the four home countries.

Also welcome will be people wishing to become coach education tutors and coach education assessors, the prerequisites are:

hold a current BRSF Coaching Award,
hold or be working towards a teaching or assessing qualification recognised by 1st4sport,
to have substantial experience in coaching in any sport,

Action Against Steroid Abuse and GHB Type Drugs

People who take drugs to enhance their physical appearance, including those who aspire to take part in the 2012 London Olympics, are being warned against using anabolic steroids as the Government today announced its intention to add a further 24 anabolic steroids and two growth promoters to the list of those already classed as Class C drugs.

These drugs are already banned by sports authorities but they are not illegal at present.

The Government recognises the harms associated with the use of anabolic steroids and today’s move is to ensure that our drug controls are up to date, with the latest evidence of harms and availability of this group of drugs. These controls continue to be aimed at suppliers and traffickers who profit from selling and supplying these substances.
