A Report on a Christmas Roller Extravaganza

A Social Skate and Dance,
an International Hockey Match &
Roller Disco

During the late afternoon of Saturday 19 December The Pier at Herne Bay was taken over by the local roller skating community for the second time in recent months for a multi discipline Roller Skating Extravaganza.

In addition to Roller Hockey, the HBU club has an active artistic skating section and there are also a number of other roller skating clubs in this part of Kent.

In spite of appalling weather - with many parts of the UK being 'snowed in' and reports of traffic mayhem and even trains being stranded inside the Channel Tunnel - the well advertised skating event commenced in the early evening with a two and a half hour social skate based as previously on the principal of the former "Afternoon Tea-Dance" which was attended by just short of 300 people, which included the Rink Hockey club AFP Giovinazzo, with some twenty supporters travelling from Italy. The local Da Vinci Dance Troupe also provided a display of Modern Dance prior to the start and in the half-time break.

It was pleasing to note that a considerable number of people who attended the Social Skate then stayed on to see the European Roller Hockey (CERS CUP)

World Launch Exceeds all Expectations

Inline Sledge Hockey, World Launch Exceeds all Expectations

It’s rare for a new sport to be created. It’s even rarer for it to immediately generate support and a fan base. But after the launch of Inline Sledge Hockey at Bisley on the weekend of the 19th December 2009 its clear that a Inline Sledge Hockey is going to be the future of inclusive sport.

Based on Ice Sledge Hockey (the Paralympic version of Ice Hockey), Inline Sledge Hockey is played on a sports hall using custom made sledges with wheels, using rules adapted from inline puck hockey. The game is as fast and as furious as Ice Sledge Hockey but with the advantage that it can be played anywhere and by anyone.

Three games were played over two days, the first two being between the Hull Stingrays and the Grimsby Redwings and the third being between a combined Stingrays/Redwings team and a number of Ice and Inline Hockey players, including current GB Inline Hockey players. This final game saw the Stingrays/Redwings team comfortably win by a 7 – 0 margin and demonstrated to any sceptics that Inline Sledge Hockey is a genuine physical, contact sport and not just a token nod to allowing the disabled and able bodied to play together.

WORLD LAUNCH

Lord Roberts Centre, Bisley, Surrey ~ Saturday 19 December 2009

The Ultimate Inclusive Team Sport
Inline Sledge Hockey Launch: 19th December 2009

In partnership with RGK, Hull Stingrays Elite League Ice Hockey team and the British Inline Puck Hockey Association, the British Sledge Hockey Association (BSHA) is proud to announce the world launch of Inline Sledge Hockey at Lord Roberts Centre, Bisley Camp, Woking, Surrey.

Sledge Hockey is a variant of ice hockey using sledges to allow participants to move about the rink at high speeds whilst controlling and hitting a puck. Players sit in adapted sledges, propelling themselves with sticks adapted to allow propulsion in a manner similar to skiing. As players are strapped to a sledge everybody has the same restrictions, regardless of whether or not the player has a disability.

The BSHA are committed to delivering a fully inclusive community and team development programme which will allow abled bodied and disabled people to learn and compete together on equal terms in a fast and furious full contact sport. The BSHA have a number of sledges (both Inline and Ice) which can be lent out free of charge to clubs, groups and schools to allow them to experience Sledge Hockey.

Notes of the Executive Board Meeting
Freiburg, Germany 20 & 21 November 2009

The following Editorial News Story has been posted on the
Fédération International de Roller Sports website

Dear friends of rollersports.org

As you know, together with the Figure Roller Skating World Championships on the 20th and 21st November the meeting of the FIRS Executive Board took place in Freiburg . I do not hesitate to say that this was an historical Executive Board both for the discussed topics and for the importance of the decisions.

First of all, I wish to underline that it was repeated in a firm and shared way the role of FIRS: the International Federation is one and only one, with one government providing the necessary support to all disciplines. Too often in the past, FIRS has been interpreted as a multi speed motor, but this last meeting of the Executive Board reaffirmed the role of the International Federation: an example, in this regard, was the decision to make every headquarter of the Continental Confederations as FIRS HQ, to reinforce the representative role of the Confederations at continental level.

Another important discussed topic was the quality of the image of our sport, beginning from the Organisation of the World Championships. It was fundamental, in this way, the decision to reaffirm the need for FIRS Departments to have maximum control over the communication, protocol and organization of the Worlds. For this reason an assigning book of the World Championships and an organisation book will be realized in addition to the communication handbook already presented at the meeting of the Executive Board held in Gold Coast in 2007.

This is the return leg of the first round of the Comité Européenn de Rink Hockey, European Cup series.

It will be recalled that a similar event was run at The Pier as recently as 1st August this year,

At 7:30 there will be a display by a local Modern Dance Troupe,
which then leads into the Roller Hockey teams introductions.

At 8:00 the match of two 25 minute halves commences.

After the match at 9:30 pm The Pier will become the venue
for a Roller Disco, closing around about 10:30.

It was invented here and has been played in our region for more than one hundred years. Roller hockey games used to fill the stands and, despite dwindling crowds, the sport is still going strong. Ursula has submitted a video of her competition program (1' 46") and her story to the CBBC website, the opening paragraphs are reproduced below.

I joined an artistic roller skating club when I was five and started to do competitions with them.

Artistic roller skating is just like ice skating on wheels. You perform the same jumps and spins to music. I love performing in front of an audience.

I sometimes get a bit nervous in case I fall. You have to be brave to jump with only a thin costume to protect you.

To be a champion takes lots of practice and I have to get up early each day and practice before school.

Letter from Ed Balls on the Vetting and Barring scheme

Below is a letter from Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families Ed Balls to Chair of the Children, Schools and Families Select Committee Barry Sheerman.
He writes about the new vetting and barring scheme that becomes operational for individuals from July 2010.

Barry Sheerman MP

House of Commons
London

Dear Barry

I am writing to you about the new vetting and barring scheme that becomes operational for individuals from next July, and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). As you will recall, the Government has taken these forward in response to recommendations made in Sir Michael Bichard’s Inquiry into the tragic child murders in Soham in 2002.

Parliament legislated for the new scheme in the 2006 Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act, for which there was overwhelming support. We recognised then, as we do now, that it is essential to ensure that children and vulnerable adults are properly safeguarded and that we do everything we reasonably can to protect them from those who seek to do them harm.

The British Inline Puck Hockey Association (the BIPHA) have been successful in obtaining a

Training courses will commence in November and will continue over the next year at a number of regional venues across England.

As these venues and dates are confirmed they will be added to the Coach Education Calendar Page
(here)

The British Inline Puck Hockey Association (the BIPHA) are aware that delivering generic (basic) roller skating skills in schools and leisure centres is an ideal way of introducing young people to roller skating and subsequently recruiting them to various roller disciplines, it is also a way of raising club funds. But as sports clubs are discovering, more and more schools and local authority leisure centres across the UK are demanding that peripatetic teaching staff (schools) and coaches (leisure centres) delivering coaching (of all sports) should hold coach qualifications equivalent to UKCC Level 2, additionally schools and leisure centres are often insisting that coaches also hold appropriate CRB Declarations.

With this in mind the BIPHA have recently and successfully applied for and been awarded a substantial grant to enable every coach in every BIPHA club the opportunity to attend a coach education course at a reduced cost and if successful to obtain a BRSF Level 2 Coach Education Award.

Memory 4 Teachers is a major new ICT initiative taking place within the UK education sector.

The project has been developed, in association with LEAs and Teacher Unions,
to support teachers and educators in addressing their ever-increasing workloads
by funding the provision of 750,000 USB memory sticks across the UK.

It is a fact of life that most teachers and academic staff have to complete important school work at home in the evenings. This includes lesson planning, student reports and marking academic work to name a few areas of responsibility. Teachers often need access to information at home that is not readily available. Memory 4 Teachers solves this problem for them in one easy step!

Apart from giving away ‘empty memory’ we are also utilising the memory sticks to provide teachers with FREE educational resources that are embedded on the USB drive for their easy reference. In addition the memory stick will also provide access to selected websites for educators and teachers.

To read this item in the correct context click here

In a recent survey of Out of School Activities commissioned for this project,
roller sports was shown as the second most popular Out of School activity by both
Physical Education staff and pupils (first was Dancing).

The BRSF have been invited, and have accepted an invitation to become a partner
in the project mentioned above.

This means that details of the British Roller Sports Federation,
including details of the services and facilities it provides,
will be burned on to the "Sports Channel" of each of the initial production run
of 750,000 memory sticks and future production runs.

Likewise similar details will also be burned on to these memory sticks on behalf of those

Roller Sports passed over in preference to Golf & Rugby Sevens

Sabitino Aracu, FIRS President
Editorial Comment on the FIRS website

Dear friends of rollersports.org,

Today the IOC Executive Board presented the two sports that will be proposed for the inclusion in the Olympic Programme after 2016: rugby seven and golf have been selected as new disciplines and roller sports has been rejected.

Unfortunately, in this decision, economic values prevailed on sport values. It is well known that rugby and golf have better economic chances and television coverage. Perhaps this is the reason that why the IOC decision is not totally unexpected and it is been time that there were rumours about this possible conclusion.

It is since 2005 that we have assigned all our relational and economical resources to promote our disciplines to the sport world and to the international media.

IOC Executive Board proposes 2 additional sports for the 2016 Games: Golf and Rugby

13 August 2009
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board (EB) proposed today the list of 26 core sports and 2 additional sports, golf and rugby, to be included in the 2016 Olympic Programme. The proposal will be submitted to the full IOC for a final decision at its Session in Copenhagen in October, where golf and rugby will have the opportunity to present. Seven sports — baseball, golf, karate, roller sports, rugby, softball and squash — were seeking to enter the Olympic programme. The secret ballot vote by the EB followed an extensive evaluation by the Olympic Programme Commission of the potential added value to the Games from each of the seven sports.

“All seven sports made a strong case for inclusion, and the EB carefully evaluated them in a transparent and fair process. In the end, the decision came down to which two would add the most value,” said IOC President Jacques Rogge, who elected not to take part in the vote. “Golf and rugby will be a great addition to the Games.”

This event was deliberately planned along the lines of the Ballroom "Tea Dance" which are now back in fashion as a result of "Strictly Come Dancing" which appears to have raised the profile. (additional history)

There were over 100 roller skaters from across Kent and Sussex, with some travelling from as far away as London, who shared the experience!

The sight of a Roller Rink full of people skating to DANCE music was a blast from the past, I can tell you.

These skaters of all ages, are all familiar with each other but normally they only meet at Roller Hockey or Artistic Skating competitions when they are segregated by their club colours and the fact they are opponents. At such meets whilst being 'friendly' to each other there is a natural distance and tension because of the competitive atmosphere.

Summary Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes present a series where teams of roller skaters compete to become crowned Britain’s best.

CBBC controller Anne Gilchrist wanted to commission a big ambitious entertainment show with brand-building potential that would inspire children to get active. We felt a talent-based shiny floor show created specifically for children would fulfil the brief.

Roller skating was chosen because it’s popular with children, and can be done just about anywhere. We quickly discovered it encapsulates everything from artistic skaters to roller hockey players. Our challenge was to open the show up to all, and create a level playing field and a performance style of our own. CBBC wanted a show that would play to the whole family, so the idea of creating a team made up of three children and an adult was born.

Having an adult team member gave us heart-warming sequences of mums and dads desperately practising to get their skills up to scratch. It also gave scope for our three judges, Camilla Dallerup, Kevin Adams and Asha Kirby, to be critical of adults in a way they could never be with child competitors.
