  Roller Hockey Taster Sessions

Colchester, Essex Sunday, 25 July 2010
2pm ~ 5 pm Manningtree Sports & Leisure Centre

Colchester Roller Hockey Club are holding Roller Hockey Taster Sessions
at Manningtree Sports & Leisure Centre on Sunday 25 July between 2pm & 5 pm

If you are interested in discovering the skills and techniques of roller hockey
with a view to possibly becoming involved in the sport at either at a recreational or at a competitive level
you are welcome to come to the Manningtree Sports & Leisure Centre in Colchester
where members of the Colchester Roller Hockey Club will make you feel most welcome.

We are looking for both boys & girls and men & women from seven years upward,
even if you are a novice skater we can provide you with initial basic roller skating skills
prior to you learning more about roller hockey.

Roller Hockey is played with hockey sticks and a ball, somewhat similar in appearance
to field hockey sticks & balls and on traditional quad roller skates.

However, if at this time you are more comfortable on inline skates you will still be welcome
and over the weeks we will help you to become confident on skating with quad skates

We have a small amount of roller skates to loan out in sizes 2.5 to 6,
so if you have roller skates of your own please bring them with you.

We will provide everyone with Sticks and balls for the sessions.

These sessions are part of the Open Weekend Events funded by the Essex Legacy from the London 2012 Games.

Why not come along and give it a go?

Halifax Roller Hockey Club
Halifax, West Yorkshire

Looking for a Goal Keeper
Experienced or Novice or Beginner

Due to our long-serving goalkeeper retiring this summer
we are currently in need of one or more goalkeepers to train and play for the club.

We are possibly thinking of entering the Premier League or National Division 1 in 2010/11
so the new recruit(s) must be committed to travelling and attending fixtures.

We would consider a goalkeeper who:

is not based locally, but is able to make our fixtures,
has experience from another roller hockey, or ice hockey code,
is young, or old, male or female

In addition we would be very interested in receiving enquiries from both confident and novice roller and inline skaters, be they recreational skaters or roller skaters from another roller discipline looking to add yet another experience to their roller skills.

Even if you don't initially want to play competitively for the club, but would be interested in learning more about roller hockey either as a goal keeper or as an out field player, we are an equal opportunities club and would welcome men and women, boys and girls who fancy a couple hours a week practising, improving and polishing your roller skills with a group of like minded individuals - please join us at Northbridge Leisure Centre, Halifax
(map), 8-10pm every Thursday and/ or 4-6pm every Saturday, where you will be given a warm welcome.

It should be mentioned that whilst our external competitive games are played on quad skates, our 'in-house' training sessions, set-piece practices, scrimmages and other club activities are open equally to quad and inline skaters alike.

If you would like further information please use this email and send your telephone number to one of the Halifax Club officials who will be pleased to return your call and answer any questions you may have.

The Peter Wimble Veterans Tournament

This tournament is for established teams or invitational teams of between 5 & 10 players.
The Rules of the Game are those of the Comité International de Rink Hockey, with a few local additional rules:
Players (excluding goalkeepers) shall be born in 1973 or earlier - 37 years or older on 1st January 2010.
Goalkeepers may
(subject to some restrictions here) be younger than 37 years.
Each game will be 2x 15 minutes.
All players shall be currently registered members of the National Roller Hockey Association
and temporary membership of the NRHA is available, at reduced rates to cover the duration of the event.

email for temporary membership details.
The event commences at 16:00 on Saturday 21 August and will have concluded by 13:15 on Sunday.

The tournament has been running since the 1980's in memory of the late Peter Wimble.

Peter Wimble was probably the best all-round SKATER the UK ever produced. He was from the Rochester Club in Kent. During the '50s and '60s until certainly early '70s he was a really great Roller Hockey player, a Champion Speed Skater and a Gold Medallist in Artistic Skating too.

Peter and others from the Rochester Club used to spend much of the summer months down in Southsea with the Southsea Club where he became a very popular personality.

When Peter died, he was only in his 50s and Southsea honoured his memory by instigating an annual Veterans Tournament in his name. This was first run in 1981 shortly after his untimely death.

Over the years this event has been an opportunity for retired players to dust off their skates and spend time both reminiscing and playing their former sport, whilst also being an opportunity for those not familiar with Roller Hockey to see the game played with great enthusiasm.

The selection of Northampton is an interesting choice as history shows that in times past Northampton
supported three roller skating rinks, the George Hotel, the Empire Roller Rink and the Castle Roller Rink.
More about the early days of roller hockey in Northampton can be found here.

A group of Roller Hockey players in Loughborough
are gathering together with a view to re-establishing
Roller Hockey in the area.

This group is looking to recruit former players, and recreational skaters
looking to progress their skating towards a specific roller sport.

Competitive Roller Hockey, which is known in Europe and Internationally as Rink Hockey is played on quad skates using a cane somewhat similar to a field hockey stick with a solid ball weighing 155 gm & 7.2cm(2¾") diameter. Whilst competitive roller hockey is played on quad skates, at a recreational level it can be played on inline skates.

Initially the team will be holding practice sessions in a local leisure/ sports centre in or near Loughborough, the longer term objective is to take part in inter-club competitions.

If you are modestly competent on quad skates, would like to take part in a team activity, with a view to taking part in competitive inter-club games, please contact Sergio Gomes on 07850 100 785, or by email
