Sledge Hockey is a variant of ice hockey using sledges to allow participants to move about the rink at high speeds whilst controlling and hitting a puck. Players sit in adapted sledges, propelling themselves with sticks adapted to allow propulsion in a manner similar to skiing. As players are strapped to a sledge everybody has the same restrictions, regardless of whether or not the player has a disability.

Based on Ice Sledge Hockey, Inline Sledge Hockey is played to the same rules as Inline Puck Hockey (essentially ice hockey played off ice using inline skates) and has been made possible by the design and manufacture of in inline sledges by RGK, Europe's premier sports wheelchair maker.

A group of Roller Hockey players in Loughborough
are gathering together with a view to re-establishing
Roller Hockey in the area.

This group is looking to recruit former players, and recreational skaters
looking to progress their skating towards a specific roller sport.

Competitive Roller Hockey, which is known in Europe and Internationally as Rink Hockey is played on quad skates using a cane somewhat similar to a field hockey stick with a solid ball weighing 155 gm & 7.2cm(2¾") diameter. Whilst competitive roller hockey is played on quad skates, at a recreational level it can be played on inline skates.

Initially the team will be holding practice sessions in a local leisure/ sports centre in or near Loughborough, the longer term objective is to take part in inter-club competitions.

If you are modestly competent on quad skates, would like to take part in a team activity, with a view to taking part in competitive inter-club games, please contact Sergio Gomes on 07850 100 785, or by email

Inline Sledge Hockey is a recently introduced variant of Ice Sledge Hockey which has been in existence for many years and for which there are many references on the Internet via the various search engines.

Why this event is being publicised on the BRSF website?

It will be recalled that at both the CERS Congress of September 2008 and the FIRS Congress of February 2009 all National Governing Bodies were requested to assist and support the promotion of all roller sports on the African Continent.

This then is the first roller event which has come to the attention of the British Roller Sports Federation
and we are very comfortable to give this international event appropriate publicity.

A Report on a Christmas Roller Extravaganza

A Social Skate and Dance,
an International Hockey Match &
Roller Disco

During the late afternoon of Saturday 19 December The Pier at Herne Bay was taken over by the local roller skating community for the second time in recent months for a multi discipline Roller Skating Extravaganza.

In addition to Roller Hockey, the HBU club has an active artistic skating section and there are also a number of other roller skating clubs in this part of Kent.

In spite of appalling weather - with many parts of the UK being 'snowed in' and reports of traffic mayhem and even trains being stranded inside the Channel Tunnel - the well advertised skating event commenced in the early evening with a two and a half hour social skate based as previously on the principal of the former "Afternoon Tea-Dance" which was attended by just short of 300 people, which included the Rink Hockey club AFP Giovinazzo, with some twenty supporters travelling from Italy. The local Da Vinci Dance Troupe also provided a display of Modern Dance prior to the start and in the half-time break.

It was pleasing to note that a considerable number of people who attended the Social Skate then stayed on to see the European Roller Hockey (CERS CUP)

World Launch Exceeds all Expectations

Inline Sledge Hockey, World Launch Exceeds all Expectations

It’s rare for a new sport to be created. It’s even rarer for it to immediately generate support and a fan base. But after the launch of Inline Sledge Hockey at Bisley on the weekend of the 19th December 2009 its clear that a Inline Sledge Hockey is going to be the future of inclusive sport.

Based on Ice Sledge Hockey (the Paralympic version of Ice Hockey), Inline Sledge Hockey is played on a sports hall using custom made sledges with wheels, using rules adapted from inline puck hockey. The game is as fast and as furious as Ice Sledge Hockey but with the advantage that it can be played anywhere and by anyone.

Three games were played over two days, the first two being between the Hull Stingrays and the Grimsby Redwings and the third being between a combined Stingrays/Redwings team and a number of Ice and Inline Hockey players, including current GB Inline Hockey players. This final game saw the Stingrays/Redwings team comfortably win by a 7 – 0 margin and demonstrated to any sceptics that Inline Sledge Hockey is a genuine physical, contact sport and not just a token nod to allowing the disabled and able bodied to play together.

Notes of the Executive Board Meeting
Freiburg, Germany 20 & 21 November 2009

The following Editorial News Story has been posted on the
Fédération International de Roller Sports website

Dear friends of rollersports.org

As you know, together with the Figure Roller Skating World Championships on the 20th and 21st November the meeting of the FIRS Executive Board took place in Freiburg . I do not hesitate to say that this was an historical Executive Board both for the discussed topics and for the importance of the decisions.

First of all, I wish to underline that it was repeated in a firm and shared way the role of FIRS: the International Federation is one and only one, with one government providing the necessary support to all disciplines. Too often in the past, FIRS has been interpreted as a multi speed motor, but this last meeting of the Executive Board reaffirmed the role of the International Federation: an example, in this regard, was the decision to make every headquarter of the Continental Confederations as FIRS HQ, to reinforce the representative role of the Confederations at continental level.

Another important discussed topic was the quality of the image of our sport, beginning from the Organisation of the World Championships. It was fundamental, in this way, the decision to reaffirm the need for FIRS Departments to have maximum control over the communication, protocol and organization of the Worlds. For this reason an assigning book of the World Championships and an organisation book will be realized in addition to the communication handbook already presented at the meeting of the Executive Board held in Gold Coast in 2007.

regardless of affiliation.

The GB Veteran Team will be entering, as will hopefully, the French National Veteran Team.

We are looking for other veteran teams to join them in an exciting Christmas Tournament.

the two team capitains and some shots of the game in progress
was broadcast on Meridian TV's evening news program on Wednesday 4th November.

This news report is currently available for viewing on the Meridian TV website (here) The story is accompanied by a short introduction:

It was invented here and has been played in our region for more than one hundred years. Roller hockey games used to fill the stands and, despite dwindling crowds, the sport is still going strong. The skating rink on the pier at Herne Bay in Kent is the spiritual home of the game but there isn't just one team in the town, there's two. But, do they see eye to eye?
