Press Release Date: 14.05.2009

Skate Nation

Presented by Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes (TMi), Skate Nation is a new fast-paced 11-part series for CBBC, which begins this summer.

This is the competition for roller skaters and inline skaters who will need to have amazing levels of agility, fitness and talent to be in with a chance of winning.

Sam says: "Skate Nation is going to be a great, action-packed show. It'll be fun to see the contestants show off their skills and the competition element adds an exciting edge."

Mark says: "Skating is becoming more and more popular in the UK, so it's great that people can showcase their talents and tricks... we might even pick up a few tips ourselves"

Anne Gilchrist, Controller, CBBC, says: "Skate Nation will be an opportunity for children to get off the sofa and get active. We'll be encouraging CBBC viewers to learn a new skill and to see how much fun and expertise can be achieved in a remarkably short time scale. It's a show all the family will take part in and enjoy."

There are 14 teams taking part, each made up of three children (age between seven and 13) and one adult. It isn't just about their skating abilities, the teams must also be able to demonstrate that they work well as a team. So they will need to encourage and support each other as they attempt to master the jumps and spins!

The competition steps up a gear as teams vie for one of ten places at Skate Camp where they will be tutored by top coaches and choreographers. This is an invaluable chance to hone their skills and work on all aspects of their performance, before the main competition begins.

For the teams that make it through camp, the Skate Stadium arena awaits. This is what the skaters have all been working towards: they will need to wow both the judges and the stadium's live audience. Each week the skaters will have to learn and perfect a new routine to perform and, as the weeks go on, the routines will get more and more challenging. The teams must pull out all the stops if they want to win.

Judges Camilla Dallerup (Strictly Come Dancing, professional dancer), Asha Kirby (professional skater) and Kevin Adams (Fame Academy, fitness instructor) will be looking for super-talented skaters with lots of potential.

The series ends with a skating extravaganza as the finalists compete for the Skate Nation title by showing off stunts and tricks which they've learnt over the series. The competition will be fierce, as the grand prize is a trip to the World Games in Taiwan to see the world's best skaters in the action.

Executive producer is Elaine Bancroft, and series producer is Kate Maddigan.

Skate Nation is set to be a nail-biting, adrenaline-fuelled competition.

Please re-visit this page at regular intervals to check when the first program is due for transmission.

Roller Hockey Referees

This notice has been published on the BRSF website as it is believed that there are a number of active
and formerly active Roller Hockey Referees, who for any number of reasons might have fallen out of sight
of the National Rink Hockey Association's normal communications network
and may not visit the NRHA website on a regular basis.
Therefore this notice is an attempt to reach those referees via visitors to this website.

Since the autumn of 2008 the National Rink Hockey Association of England
have been looking to contact all active and formerly active Roller Hockey Referees,
be they attached to clubs or independent and working as regional or national referees.

An initial announcement advertising the project and seeking details of all known referees was land mailed to clubs and posted to the National Roller Hockey Association website on 17 October 2008.

Subsequently a paper giving background details of the project and calling for nominations for the position of chairman of the newly formed Committee for Roller Hockey Referees (crhr) was published on the National Roller Hockey Association website on 7 November 2008.

L’AQUILA EARTHQUAKE

It was with great sadness that the British Federation of Roller Sports and
the Federation of Inline Speed Skating learnt of the earthquake in L’Aquila.

Less than 5 years ago the GB team and teams from around the world receive the warmest of welcomes
from the people of the city of L’Aquila on the occasion of the 2004 World Inline Speed Skating Championships.

The people of the city turned out in their thousands to support
the event and made it a championship that we will always remember.

There are many famous speed skaters from the city, both past and present,
and it is our hope that everyone connected with our sport have survived the tragedy and are safe.

To all those who have suffered in this terrible disaster
the British Federation of Roller Sports and
the Federation of Inline Speed Skating send their sympathy and condolences.

Funding Sport in the Community

06 January 2009

Sport England today published its new funding strategy, setting out the investment programmes that will be available to organisations delivering grassroots sport from April 2009.

Funding sport in the community explains how investment will be focussed on organisations and projects that can deliver the key outcomes of Sport England’s overall strategy - ‘grow, sustain and excel’.

Sports clubs, voluntary and community organisations, local authorities and education establishments will be able to apply to these four open-access funding streams worth a maximum of £45 million per year:

Up to £30 million will be invested via regular themed funding rounds that meet specific needs of community sport
£7 million will be available in small grants of between £300 and £10,000 to support sporting projects across England
£3 million will be distributed through Sportsmatch, enabling community clubs to make the most of the funding they receive from the private sector by matching that investment
£5 million will be invested, through a new Innovation Fund, in projects that identify and pilot new ways of promoting and supporting grassroots sport.

Sport England will also invest £10 million per year of capital funding in projects that promote a sustainable approach to community facilities. This capital funding will be in addition to the facilities funding awarded to national governing bodies of sport (NGBs).

Represent Great Britain at the

The British Roller Sports Federation wish to congratulate
Darren Dyke & Kirsty Chick
in their success at representing Great Britain during the
Senior World Roller Figure Skating Championships,
held in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei over the past few days.

Darren & Kirsty's home club is the Phoenix Artistic Roller Skating Club in the Channel Island of Guernsey and there are two comprehensive reports on the club website . The earlier report which describes Darren & Kirsty's passage through the British Championships, which culminated in their selection to represent Great Britain at both "The European's" and "The World's", is actually the second report on the website. The more recent report describes their time at the World Championships.

The earlier report starts with the following paragraph:

A small team of skaters from the Phoenix Artistic Roller Skating Club have just returned from the 2008 Junior & Senior British Roller Skating Championships held in Haywards Heath, Kent. Senior Couple Darren Dyke and Kirsty Chick, following their four year partnership, finally reaped the benefit of all the hard training and commitment by winning the Senior Dance title.
